    I. UF CASA’s Third General Body Meeting: House Drama!!
    Watch out, Shakespeare, CASA is ready to bring down the house with our next general body meeting! If you ever heaved a sigh over the tale of Romeo and Juliet, you will definitely not want to miss out on our newest CASAwesome production–a thrilling new take on the beloved Chinese classic, “The Butterfly Lovers” (《梁祝》)!! If you aren’t familiar with the plot, now’s your chance to learn all about one of the most moving love stories written in ancient China. So come on out, all you fantastic CASA members, and bring a friend or two to our most exciting meeting yet! What’s not to love?

    VI. UF Asian Kaleidoscope Month 2011 – Defining Your Story

    October 12 – November 11

    Asian Kaleidoscope Month (AKM) is a month-long celebration that seeks to educate and bring awareness of the histories, cultures, and contributions of Asians and Asian Americans. Through this year’s programming, “AKM 2011: Defining Your Story” aims to highlight the unique stories of individuals in the Asian and Asian American community. The main goal is to spotlight each individual’s background and origin, passions, personality, and motivations as they answer the question, “What’s Your Story?” AKM has hosted many prominent Asian and Asian American speakers in the past including Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi; Betty Nguyen, CNN correspondent; past entertainers Quest Crew and Poreotics from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and YouTube sensations Gabe Bondoc and Clara C.

    Hamara Asia Film Series Part 1

    The event Hamara Asia presents the screening of the movie “Veer Zaara.” A story about lovers that transcend the political boundaries of India and Pakistan, “Veer Zaara” does well in exemplifying the tragedy of the conflict that is very well known among the South Asian sphere. In 2004, “Veer Zaara” went on to become the highest grossing film in India as well as earn many awards and recognition overseas.

    Get ready for this year’s Asian Kaleidoscope Month 2011 Fashion Show, MODE: Asian Americans Designing Fashion! This year, we will be presenting pieces from a variety of Asian American fashion designers as well as hosting a question-and-answer session from the designers themselves. Talented Asian American designers will be sharing their collections and insight into the fashion industry with the University of Florida and Gainesville community! We will also be featuring performances from local entertainers live on the runway! Stay tuned to find out which talented designers we will be showcasing at the show.

    I.      CASA Presents Halloween 2011: A CASAdventure!! 
    Muhahaha…Are you ready for an a-MAZE-ing CASAdventure this Halloween season? Yes?

    Looks like you’re in luck.

    CASA at UF is challenging YOU to come out on Saturday, October 29th to the corn maze at Roger’s Farm with your friends and see who’s the bravest of them all! Don’t have a ride? Don’t worry–we’ll be meeting at the Commuter Lot or Reitz Roundabout for rides arrangement at 8:00pm. FIRST FIFTEEN PEOPLE TO ARRIVE GET FREE ADMISSION!!!

    Date: Saturday, October 29th
    Time: Meet at 8:00, arrive at the maze by 9:00

    Asian Kaleidoscope Month invites you to Beauty & Business workshop where you can learn valuable tips on how to jumpstart a career in the business of creativity! We are excited to feature Van Pham, a talented make-up artist and hair stylist from San Francisco, California! Van Pham has been a professional makeup and hair artist for over five years. She is highly experienced in all genres of makeup including; theatre, special effects, fashion and beauty. With her blooming career in the industry, Van is one of the senior artists on the A-List Makeup Team, which won the Bride’s Choice Award. She also has numerous years of experiences in styling in beauty pageants, including Miss Vietnam Global, Miss Hmong International, Miss National Asia, Miss San Francisco (which feeds into the Miss Universe system) and many more!     Welcome to AASU’s Got Talent! Challenge Edition. This year Asian Kaleidoscope Month will present AASU’s Got Talent in a fresh new way. In addition to the vast variety of acts, cultures, and stories, there will be a new spin to the talent show that will enhance the performances and get the crowd pumped! Each act will showcase their talent but with a challenge as assigned by the directors. If that isn’t exciting enough, get ready to be blown away by our guest performer Dumbfoundead!     Asian Americans in the Media: Real Life vs. Reel Life

    How do you feel when you see an Asian American on TV or in the movies? Proud they are representing your culture? Embarrassed that they are portraying an incorrect stereotype? Angry that there’s only one Asian American in a cast of 40? Come out to “Asian Americans in the Media: Real Life vs. Reel Life” to learn more about the effects of Asian American stereotypes in the media. Special guest Phil Yu, owner of the “Angry Asian Man” blog (www.angryasianman.com) will lead a discussion-based workshop and educate you on different ways to react to these media instances. Prepare yourself for an extremely insightful event and be sure to come with an open mind!

    Exhale with MCDA & Gator Nights

    Exhale is an open mic poetry night that aims to get people excited about poetry in all its various forms. The event commences with an open mic session that leads into a performance by a featured guest artist, Beau Sia. Those that want to display their artistry – or just want to listen to some excellent performances – are more than welcome to attend this once a semester poetry event.
    If you are interested in performing during the open mic session, there will be a sign up right before the event so please show up early. For promotional uses, we are asking artists to be videotaped during their performance.

    This is the biggest event during Asian Kaleidoscope Month, and past performers include America’s Best Dance Crew Poreotics and Quest Crew, musician Clara C, and comedian Dat Phan. Stay tuned to find out who will be performing at AAEF this year!

    VIII.  Gatorship 2012
    Gatorship is a unique leadership experience for both emerging and experienced student leaders at the University of Florida. It is designed to be an intense and thought-provoking weekend retreat during which over 60 participants and student staff have the opportunity to interact through team building activities and group discussions. The focus is to identify current leadership issues in a multicultural society both at the University of Florida and in the community. Participants will engage in educational sessions and serve as peer educators through the sharing of personal experience.
    Gatorship 2012 will be on January 13-15 and February 10-12. The application deadline is TODAY, October 23, at 11:59pm. Applicants will be notified by November 23.



    IX.    UIS in Need of Research Participants
    The University of Illinois at Springfield needs university student participants for a survey. Below is a message from them:

    Dear Members of Chinese American Student Association:

    We are seeking individuals who are (1) at least 18 years of age and (2) undergraduates to complete a confidential web-based survey that will ask you about factors that are related to your educational aspirations.

    The entire study should take approximately 30-40 minutes. The answers you provide will be kept completely confidential. You will not be asked to provide your name on the inventory.

    We would greatly appreciate you taking part in the survey and contributing to our understanding of factors that relate to educational aspirations.  As a thank you, participants who complete the survey can enter into a lottery drawing to win one of four $25 gift certificates or one of four $50 gift certificates.

    Join CaribLaw, the Immigration Law Association, Latino/a Law Student Association, and Black Law Students Association as they raise funds for the Campaign for an American Dream!
    Proceeds from games/shoe rentals/food/drink will go to their collective effort.
    All you have to do is tell the Splitz Bowling staff you are a “Dreamer,” and have a great night bowling, eating and drinking with students from various undergraduate and graduate organizations.
